Want to generate AI characters with lifelike expressions, voices, and motion? Then hold on to your seat because I’m here to tell you all about Hedra AI.

Founded by Michael Lingelbach and Alex Bergman, Hedra AI launched and unveiled its foundation video generation model, Character-1, to the public in August 2024.
It was designed to give users fine-grained control over character-driven storytelling. But while Hedra AI experienced surging demand, it still had a few teething issues to work out.
So, they kept on refining it. This led to the recent launch of their Character-3 model, developed to offer more emotional expression, precise lip syncing, and even full body motion capture.
This also happens to be Hedra AI’s first omnimodal model, which means that I can use it to generate all kinds of audio, image, and video content.
With such a unified AI generation solution, I can create realistic, controllable, and customizable virtual characters that can speak, sing, or even rap for almost any use case.

But that’s not all! Besides its proprietary model, Hedra AI is also connected to popular AI generation tools like Runway, Veo 2, Minimax Hailuo, Flux, Ideogram, Kling AI, and others.
This level of flexibility means I can effectively switch between various AI models and create all sorts of varied image and video outputs.
Hedra AI has kept growing in popularity with over 3M active users and 10M generated videos. So, it was no surprise to hear the company recently managed to raise $32M in Series A funding.
With all this hype around it, I was eager to see what Hedra AI can do. So, I decided to carry out my own test and assess its character-centric AI generation capabilities.
For my first attempt, I started with something simple. I tried out Hedra AI’s image generation with a photo of a beautiful woman in a flight attendant’s uniform shopping in a grocery store.

As you can see, the image output was great. The level of character realism and background detail makes it hard to tell that this isn’t a live camera capture. This was a definite 9/10 result.
Next up, I wanted to try out a more complex image generation. I requested Hedra AI to create a cyberpunk-inspired futuristic humanoid exosuit on a model shelf. This was what it produced.

Once again, the image render was good. Hedra AI adhered to my instructions with intricate details included in the suit design for that extra bit of futuristic realism. Another 9/10 result!
When it comes to image generation, I think it’s safe to say that Hedra AI can deliver quality outputs. The platform clearly displays an exceptional level of consistency that is hard to ignore.
But the true test lies in its AI character visuals. Can it replicate this same level of performance on the video front? I was itching to find out!
So, I started off with something basic using the Character-3 model. I uploaded the static image you see below and requested Hedra AI to generate a video of him talking to the camera.
This was the result Hedra AI produced.
The subject’s mouth movements reflected the tone of the audio relatively well, with just a few disjointed bits here and there. It seems Hedra AI has a good handle on that department.
I also noticed how the lighting adjusted to match his head movements, which was a pretty cool thing to see. This did well at making the video look even more realistic.
In this test case, I’d give Hedra AI a 7.5/10.
In my next test, I focused on trying out Hedra AI’s full body motion capabilities. I wanted to see if it could do a better job of presenting natural body movements. So, I uploaded the image below.
This was the video it generated.
This time around, the results were a bit of a mixed bag. The lip syncing was relatively good with very few mismatches in her speech patterns.
However, there were some exaggerations in her head movements. Her body motions were also somewhat awkward and stiff, which made her head movements look even more unusual.
This time around, I’d give Hedra AI 6/10 score.
For my final test, I wanted to see if generating a video with less focus on body motion. So, I uploaded a simple selfie image to see if this would produce better results.
You can see the generated output below.
This time around, the results were far more impressive. Hedra AI created a more realistic video with the lip syncing being spot on and the head movements far more natural.
Even the eye blinking was believable. It seems the tool does better with natural facial expressions than it does with emulating full body motion.
In this test, I would award Hedra AI a 9/10. A stellar result!
All in all, if I had to sum up my experience with Hedra AI, then I would say it is a worthwhile investment for any creator out there. As I’ve explained and shown, it isn’t perfect.
It could use some improvement in producing natural head and body movements more consistently. So, you may need to experiment with different start frames for the ideal result.
Otherwise, Hedra AI is a good choice to consider, especially if you need a multimodal studio that caters to audio, image, and video outputs.
